Pitso Mosimane: I Voted for Itu, Coz he Got Many Clean Sheets

Pretoria - Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane has revealed his choices for the Absa Premiership Player of the Season category for the PSL awards.

The final list of nominees for all the categories at the annual PSL Awards is set to be announced on May 21, after the coaches have been given until May 10 to vote for their preferred candidates.

However, coaches have been barred from voting for players from their own camps, and Mosimane dauntlessly revealed his candidates, though expressing his distaste in not being able to vote for The Brazilians’ star attacker Percy Tau, who is shoo-in for the accolade.

‘Jingles’ thus opted for Kaizer Chiefs shotstopper Itumeleng Khune, who has amassed 16 clean sheets thus far this season, as well as Maritzburg United starlet Siphesihle Ndlovu.

“I voted for Itu, because he’s got many clean sheets. If a goalkeeper of a team is goalkeeper of the year then I think you should know that he was doing a lot of work to make sure that the team doesn’t lose,” said Mosimane.
Simply the Best

“I also voted for Siphesihle Ndlovu. As I said, I can’t vote for Percy, but when I look at the points-difference between Maritzburg and Sundowns and the number of goals that Percy and ‘Siphe’ scored, I said, ‘Oh, okay, but I have to vote,’ then I voted for the boy.

“I think he has done exceptionally well as a youngster and he’s had a fantastic year, but Percy scored – I think – nine goals last year? That’s why he says they are in the same position. So, those are the boys who did very well this year.”

Pressed once again for his thoughts on who should win the Coach of the Year prize, the former Bafana Bafana mentor reluctantly pointed towards his Orlando Pirates and Maritzburg counterparts, before also sarcastically poking at Free State Stars’ Luc Eymael.

“I spoke about 'Micho' [Sredojevic] and Fadlu Davids, and if you increase the welfare group then you can add Free State Stars’ coach also,” he stated.
