Ray Vines intends to penetrate the billion-dollar global comedy industry.

“Five years from now, I want to follow Trevor Noah’s footsteps. I do stand-up comedy, even without scripts,” said Ray Vines in 2019.

The versatile actor is gifted beyond comedy. When off the stage, he is an entrepreneur, in addition to studying computer science.

“I follow both ways, that is education and comedy, but in this country, education is like hassling, it is like a trial and error,” he told ZiFM Stereo in 2019.

“You need to take a risk in Zimbabwe to make a living. I also do merchandise and selling of other brands.”

The influencer’s versatility is visible in his content creation. “I shift from one concept to the other. I work with someone who takes videos and I do the editing,” he said.

“I normally concentrate on one-minute videos. I plan to grow my social media platforms and build my fan base but my numbers are still improving.”

Acting blossomed from a tender age for Melusi Chiripowako, later on assuming the moniker Ray Vines.

“I started making videos for the youths, but now I am focusing on everyone. Later on, I intend to go global since I am getting better and better every day,” said Ray Vines.

Comedy has now become his passion and means of livelihood. “I loved comedy video when I grew up and I started to make videos and I knew I am talented. I was inspired by people from outside the country. Some of the people are doing well, you must be unique. If you want to be a hit you must be unique.”

The vine concept originated in the US and he adopted it for the local market. “I took the US concept and turned them into something suitable for the Zimbabwe market. A vine is a social media application, I fused it with my local flavour and called in Ray Vines,” said the comedian.

Vine is a free mobile application enabling users to record and share unlimited short and videos. He however, he lamented the lack of creativity by some of the actors.

“There is no creativity in the local comedy industry. I appreciate other local comedy acts like Gonyeti and others.” But unlike the comedienne, he is scared to plunge into political satire. To divert invasion of privacy by fans, he considers everyone as a follower, no strings attached.
