Sha Sha, born Charmaine Shamiso Mapambiro in Zimbabwe has duly earned the title of Queen of Amapiano.

The singer’s nomadic childhood lifestyle accorded her a chance to learn various languages. As a teenager, she caught the attention of singer-songwriter Audius Mtawarira, after singing on the radio, who eventually became her mentor.

And a cab driver in South Africa connected her to DJ Maphorisa, igniting a blossoming working relationship, and she was signed by the Blaqboy Music label in 2018. A year later, she dropped Blossom.

At only 26, Sha Sha, a champion in Shona vernacular has surpassed what many musicians can only dream of. The Amapiano vocalist’s undisputed talent is putting Zimbabwe on the musical map.

After becoming the first Zimbabwean to win a BET Award, she was gushing. “I am out of words, I did not see this coming at all,” she tweeted about the accolade.

The BET Awards celebrates music, film, acting and sports excellence by athletes and artists of colour. They are organised by Black Entertainment Television, a prevalent station for African American viewers in the United States.

National Arts Council of Zimbabwe (NACZ) director Nicholas Moyo said this was ground-breaking for the arts industry and fellow artistes should take a leaf from the talented musician.

“As we speak we are actually doing a congratulatory letter, which will be sent to her. It is a good present to Zimbabwe and it brings smiles to the arts industry, especially in the times we are, it brings relief,” said the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe (NACZ).

Plot Mhako, an art critic was ecstatic with Sha Sha’s win. “This is historic. It is monumental for Zimbabwe as a country, a global win for our artistes too. Sha Sha has just reignited a flame of self-belief, perseverance and national pride. She has proven that it is possible and Zimbabwe has a space to fill on the international stage.”

The nomination earlier had caused her to get excited. “Honestly, I’m just grateful, thankful, excited, numb just a whole lot of emotions. The mere fact that I’m nominated man,” she said. “This is amazing! I need you all more than ever to bring this home,” she added on Twitter, asking for her fans to vote for her.”

This year, Sha Sha is on the global radar for her inclusion in a soundtrack album for a forthcoming Eddie Murphy movie Coming to America 2, which is set to be released on 5 March.

Her inclusion has left the nation proud. “She is just lovable and self-contained, zero drama. I love her,” gushed one fan on Instagram.
