Harare, Zimbabwe – Simon Khaya Moyo, the man who penned the letter that dismissed the current Zimbabwe president, Emmerson Mnangagwa from the ruling Zanu-PF party has died.

He was aged 76.

A family member contacted by the media confirmed his demise. “He has breathed his last following a long illness. The man has rested,” the family source said.

On 6 November 2017, exactly four years ago, Moyo, the then minister of information fired Mnangagwa from his post as the nation’s Vice President in a letter that would ignite a coup, a week later.

In it, Moyo wrote that “The vice president has consistently and persistently exhibited traits of disloyalty, disrespect, deceitfulness and unreliability.”

“It had become evident that his conduct in his discharge of his duties had become inconsistent with his official responsibilities,” Moyo added.

On November 14, the army moved swiftly to dislodge Robert Mugabe, rewarding Mnangagwa with the presidential post.

In 2018, Moyo was moved to the party headquarters, where he held various posts, including the ruling party Chairman post, until his death from a cancer-related ailment. From 2007 to 2011, he was an ambassador to South Africa.

The late ruling party member was a former Zipra cadre, who played a key role in the liberation struggle and is previously Zimbabwe’s ambassador to South Africa.

He quit his ambassadorial post in 2009 to take up to become a Zanu PF national chairman and also held several cabinet posts until he was retired by President Mnangagwa in 2018.

According to online sources, Moyo joined Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle in 1968 under Zapu, where he received his military training in Russia and Cuba after he completed his Social Science studies in Zambia. 

During the early independence years, he was a close aide of the later liberation icon, Joshua Nkomo. His death has however ignited various comments on social media platforms. While other Zimbabweans regard him as a liberator, others felt betrayed by his political beliefs and association to the ruling party.
